BuyMe directions (demo.grn.dk)

At a glance

buyme.grn.dk has been Greg Nowak's own for-sale board since 2012. A car, two sofas, a chair, a flat and a whole web forum have been sold there, and it still ran on the Drupal 7 site it launched with. The brief on the Trello card was three lines: it is ugly and outdated, give me three cool template options, make them creative and human instead of the usual AI look. Three working directions came back, each built from the real listings and photos, and they now sit side by side on demo.grn.dk. Greg picked B, a Danish newspaper page.

3 working design directions, each one static HTML file built on the real listings and photos
Starting point: Drupal 7.103, end of life since January 2025, Lighthouse mobile 76 / 74 / 83
Direction B, the newspaper, picked for the rebuild as a static site

The challenge

Five listings, one seller, one thing still for sale: the Logistikforum.org forum at 30.000 kr. Behind them sat Drupal 7.103, end of life since January 2025, with a green 2012 theme and one listing table. Lighthouse on mobile gave it 76 for performance, 74 for accessibility and 83 for SEO.

The hard part was the last line of the brief. Three templates that all look like the same AI landing page are easy to make. The ask was for three pages that feel made by a person, each with its own idea of what a for-sale page is.

The solution

Each direction is one static HTML file with no framework and a few lines of script. The listings and photos were exported read-only from the old database. Sold things stay on the page, because a board that has already sold a car and a flat is more convincing than one showing a single item.

Direction A: a handwritten notice titled Things I'm selling, with tear-off contact tabs and photo prints wearing paper price tags
A, price tags. A handwritten notice on a board with tear-off contact tabs. The photos are prints with paper price tags on strings, a red SOLD stamp marks what is gone, and a toggle shows only what is left.
Direction B: the BuyMe Tidende front page with a blackletter masthead and the headline Et helt logistikforum søger ny ejer
B, BuyMe Tidende. A Danish classifieds page with a blackletter masthead, halftone photos and small boxed ads. The forum is the front-page story, a red pen circles it, and the sold ads are crossed out with "solgt!" in the margin. This is the one Greg picked.
Direction C: a calm gallery page headed Everything here had a life before you
C, object labels. A quiet gallery where every object hangs with a museum label: number, history and status. The photos develop as you scroll, and any photo opens larger.

All three honour reduced motion. Open any of them on demo.grn.dk/buyme and use the bar at the top to flip between them.

The results

Greg chose B the next morning. It is the next build: buyme.grn.dk as a static site with the listings in one JSON file, so a board that sells one forum no longer depends on an end-of-life CMS. The three directions stay on the demo shelf the way they were shown, next to a screenshot of the old Drupal 7 site.
